What Is a Tooth Extraction?
An extraction removes a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. A simple extraction removes a visible tooth; a surgical extraction may be needed if a tooth is broken at the gum line or hasn't fully come through.

Sometimes a tooth can't be saved and taking it out is the right step. At our Al Rigga clinic, the dentist first checks whether a filling, root canal treatment or crown could keep the tooth, then explains the extraction and its cost before you decide.
An extraction removes a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. A simple extraction removes a visible tooth; a surgical extraction may be needed if a tooth is broken at the gum line or hasn't fully come through.

Only a dentist can decide whether extraction is needed after examining you.
The process
The dentist examines the tooth, may take an X-ray and explains whether it can be saved.
Your options, the procedure and the cost are explained before you decide.
Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth and surrounding area.
The tooth is carefully loosened and removed.
You receive advice on healing and when to contact the clinic.
The number of visits and exact steps depend on your case and are confirmed after examination.
A simple extraction usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, including the time for the numbing to work; taking the tooth out is usually the shortest part. A surgical extraction usually takes longer, and the dentist tells you what to expect beforehand.
You can usually go back to light activities the same day. The gum usually closes over in one to two weeks, while the bone underneath usually takes a few months to fill in. The dentist confirms your plan at the first visit.
Cost
An extraction is priced after consultation. The dentist examines the tooth, takes an X-ray if needed and tells you whether it will be a simple or surgical extraction and what it costs, before anything starts. If you'd like to replace the tooth later, the dentist can explain those options and their costs too.

Options
The type of extraction depends on the tooth's position and condition, which the dentist assesses before treatment. Ask us which options are available for your case.

For a tooth that is visible above the gum and can be removed without surgery.
For a tooth broken at the gum line or not fully erupted, which may need a small incision.
After an extraction, replacing the tooth can help with chewing and keep nearby teeth from shifting. Options include dental bridges and dentures. The dentist can explain which suits you. Meet our dentists and read our patient reviews before your visit.
Yes. The dentist checks whether a filling, root canal treatment or a crown could keep it, and explains those options and their costs alongside the extraction. The choice is yours.
A tooth that has broken at the gum line, has curved roots or hasn't fully come through may need a small cut in the gum to remove it. The dentist sees this on the X-ray and tells you before treatment.
Walk-ins are welcome every day from 9 AM to 10 PM. If the dentist confirms after the examination that a simple extraction is the right step and there's time, it can often be done at the same visit. Otherwise we arrange a time that suits you.
Wait until the numbness wears off, then start with soft, cool food such as yoghurt, lukewarm soup or mashed vegetables, and chew on the other side. Avoid hot drinks, straws and smoking for the first day or two.
Some oozing on the first day is normal. Bite firmly on a clean gauze pad for 30 minutes. If bleeding is heavy or doesn't slow down, or the pain gets worse after two or three days, contact us.
A dental bridge or a denture can replace the tooth, and for back teeth it's often worth it because nearby teeth can drift into the gap. The dentist can go through the options before the extraction.
